The gastric banding operation is a small band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch. As with stomach stapling, the small size of the pouch means that you feel full sooner. But the band can be adjusted in size by inflating or deflating the band. This allows the health professional to adjust the size of the opening between the pouch and the stomach. So it is used to weight loss surgery where the size of the stomach is reduced using a band so that only small meals can be eaten and you feel fuller soon.The size of the pouch needs to be adjusted by adding or removing fluid in the band. This is done through a tube that runs from the band to a port in your chest or lower abdomen. The port sits under the skin.
